Module D: Managing Spatial Data

Overview

This module focuses on using the ArcCatalog software to perform file and folder management.  The topics covered are exploring the interface, creating, copying, renaming and deleting folders / datasets.

Learning objectives

Upon successful completion of this topic you will be able to:

  • Use ArcCatalog to create folders
  • Use ArcCatalog functionality to copy datasets
  • Use ArcCatalog functionality to rename datasets
  • Use ArcCatalog functionality to delete datasets

Notes:

  1. All management of ArcGIS files should be done using ArcCatalog not Windows Explorer
  2. A folder name should not contain spaces. (e.g. GIS_Training not GIS Training)

Creating a new folder

The video player below provides a short video that shows how to create a folder using ArcCatalog.

Use the following steps to create a folder

  1. Right click on the Drive / folder under which you want to create the new folder
  2. Click on New
  3. Select the Folder menu item
  4. Enter the name of the new folder

Note:

Remember if the name consists of more than one word, please join them using the underscore.  DO NOT USE SPACES in the name.

Copying a Folder / Dataset

The video player below provides a short video that shows how to copy a folder or dataset using ArcCatalog.

Use the following steps to copy a folder or dataset.

  1. Connect to the location of the data to be copied (if not already in Contents window)
  2. Right Click on data to be copied
  3. Select Copy from the Context Menu
  4. Right Click on the destination location
  5. Select Paste from the Context Menu

Renaming a folder / dataset

The link below gives a short youtube video that shows how to rename a folder or dataset in ArcCatalog.  If youtube is unavailable, you may wish to use the video player provided below the link.

Use the following steps to rename a folder or dataset.

  1. Connect to the location of the data to be renamed (if not already in Contents window)
  2. Right Click on data to be renamed
  3. Select Rename from the Context Menu
  4. Type the new name in the edit box

Deleting a folder / dataset

Use the following steps to delete a folder / dataset using ArcCatalog

  1. Right Click on the folder / dataset to be deleted
  2. Select Delete from the context menu
  3. Confirm the deletion by clicking Yes in the dialog box

Moving a folder / dataset

ArcCatalog gives you the facility to drag and drop a folder / dataset in order to move it.  I would suggest that you copy it to the new location, check to see that it is there, then delete it from the old location.  This method ensures that you have the data where you need it and it has not been misplaced in the drag / drop method.

Other ArcCatalog Features

The short video below shows some alternative methods for data management in ArcCatalog.  It also points out how to access the geography view of the data as well as the table view.
